Cactus - Cuddly

$60.00

Botanical Name: Cereus Jamacaru

Preferred Light: Performs best under bright, direct light to full sun. Low-light conditions are not recommended, as insufficient light may limit healthy growth. South- and west-facing windows provide optimal exposure. During fall and winter, supplemental full-spectrum grow lighting may be beneficial to maintain adequate light levels.

Irrigation: Water every 2–3 weeks, allowing the growing medium to dry thoroughly between waterings. Watering frequency may increase under brighter light conditions and decrease in lower light. Adapts well to average indoor humidity levels, including relatively dry environments.

Temperature: Cuddly Cacti perform best in warm temperatures between 65°F and 90°F. This range supports healthy growth during the active growing season. They are not frost-tolerant, and exposure to freezing temperatures may result in severe tissue damage or plant loss.

Soil: Use a specialized cactus and succulent mix formulated with coarse, well-draining materials such as perlite, pumice, or coarse sand. These components improve aeration and drainage by creating air spaces within the growing medium and allowing excess moisture to drain efficiently.

For a homemade blend, combine equal parts standard potting mix and perlite. The goal is to provide a well-aerated, fast-draining medium that prevents excess moisture from accumulating around the roots, which can contribute to root rot and other moisture-related problems.

Propagation: Propagation is best accomplished through stem cuttings, a simple and reliable method. Select a healthy stem segment and allow the cut end to dry and callus for several days before planting. Once callused, place the cutting in a light, well-draining growing medium to encourage root development.

Toxicity: Considered non-toxic to cats and dogs when grown as an ornamental houseplant. Risks do come from spines, glochids, and there may be digestive irritation if ingested.

Unhealthy Plant Signs:

  • Mushy stem + consistently wet potting mix:
May indicate overwatering or poor drainage. Allow the growing medium to dry thoroughly between waterings.
  • Wrinkled stems + dry potting mix:
May indicate underwatering or prolonged moisture deficiency. Water thoroughly once the growing medium has dried completely.

The Cuddly Cactus is specially bred to produce minimal spines, giving it a soft, approachable appearance. As the plant matures, newly developing arms may produce small spines. These can be carefully pruned to help maintain its signature “cuddly” form.
